Winter Color Palette

By the Skintonic team · SKINTONIC LLC · Updated

Winter is the coolest and strongest of the four color families. Where the other three families soften, blur or warm up, winter stays sharp. Its colors are either very deep or very clear, and almost never dusty.

If you are a winter, your coloring carries contrast. There is usually a visible gap between your hair and your skin, your eyes read as defined rather than blended, and strong color sits comfortably on you where it would overwhelm someone else. That is the quality the winter palette is built to match.

What every winter has in common

A cool undertone

Every winter leans blue or pink rather than golden. Silver sits more naturally against the skin than yellow gold, and warm earth tones bring out yellow in the face.

Contrast, not blending

Winter coloring separates. Hair, skin and eyes sit at different levels of lightness, and the palette keeps that separation rather than smoothing it over.

Clarity over dust

Winters wear pure color. A shade that has been grayed down to make it easier reads as faded here, which is the opposite of what it does on a summer or an autumn.

The three winter types

Four colors from each below. The full palette, three outfits and the shades to leave alone sit on each type’s own page.

Deep Winter

The darkest of the three. Near-black shades look natural rather than severe, and warm neutrals like camel are the ones that flatten it.

Cool Winter

The purest cool of all twelve. Icy pastels and saturated jewel tones both work, which is unusual, and cream is the shade that lets it down.

Bright Winter

The highest contrast on the wheel. Eyes read bright against dark hair, and anything dusty reads as a mistake.

How to tell which one you are

Start with black and pure white

Hold both near your face in daylight. On a winter they look crisp and deliberate. If black feels heavy and pulls your face down, you are probably looking at a summer rather than a winter.

Then check depth

If your overall coloring is very dark and you can wear near-black comfortably, that points to Deep Winter. If icy pastels suit you as well as jewel tones, Cool Winter. If your eyes are unusually bright against dark hair, Bright Winter.

Finally check warmth

A winter who looks better in cream than optic white is usually not a winter at all, and is worth checking against the autumn family instead.

Two winters can look alike until you put them side by side; what separates them is depth and how bright your eyes read, not undertone.

Six questions will place you in the family, and the photo scan will tell you which of the three you are. Take the color analysis quiz.

Questions

Can every winter wear black?

Broadly yes, and few other families can. Deep Winter wears it most naturally, Bright Winter uses it as a backdrop for strong color, and Cool Winter can carry it but often looks better in true navy or charcoal.

What is the difference between a winter and a summer?

Both are cool. Summer is soft and blended; winter is clear and contrasted. The same cool blue works on both, but the summer version is dusty and the winter version is pure.

Is winter the same as cool?

Not quite. Cool describes undertone only, and both summer and winter are cool. Winter adds clarity and contrast on top of it.
