Does this color suit me?

By the Skintonic team · SKINTONIC LLC · Updated

You are holding a sweater in a shop and you cannot tell. Pick your season, pick the color, and this will tell you whether it belongs near your face, whether it is better worn lower down, or whether to put it back.

Check a color

1 Pick your season

Don't know it yet? Take the two-minute quiz, or get your season free from one photo.

2 Pick a color

Everything above happens in this browser tab. The season you choose and the color you type are never sent anywhere and never saved.

What the three answers mean

Great for you means the color sits inside what your season carries well — close to something already in your palette, or near enough on warmth, clarity and depth that it behaves the same way. Buy it in whatever shape you like.

Can work, wear it away from your face is the honest middle. The color is not fighting you, but it is not doing you any favors either. Below the waist, in a bag or in a coat you keep open, it costs you nothing.

Not your best means the color pulls against one of the four things the analysis measures — usually warmth, sometimes clarity, sometimes depth. The sentence under the verdict says which one.

Why the color nearest your face matters most

Fabric reflects light upward onto your jaw, your cheeks and the skin under your eyes. A shade that works against your undertone puts a faint cast there, and the eye reads that as tiredness rather than as a bad sweater. The same color on a pair of trousers does nothing of the kind, because it is nowhere near the skin anyone is looking at.

That is why a single verdict is not quite enough, and why the middle answer exists. Most of a wardrobe does not sit near the face, so most of a wardrobe has more room than people assume.

If you do not know your season yet

You need one before this tool can say anything. The fastest route is a photo — the free analysis reads your skin, eyes and hair and gives you the season plus a preview of your colors in about thirty seconds, with no account. If you would rather answer questions than take a photo, the color analysis quiz gets you to a likely answer, and the undertone test settles the single factor people most often get wrong about themselves.

You can also read all twelve in the seasons guide and recognize yourself in one of them.

Questions

How does it decide?

It measures the distance between the color you entered and the colors in that season’s palette, then weighs the color’s own warmth, clarity and depth against what the season calls for. It is the same scoring the full report uses, so a verdict here will not contradict one you get later.

Why does it only suggest one color?

Because the full palette is the paid part. One suggestion is enough to point you in the right direction in a shop; the whole set, grouped by how to wear it, is what the $9 report is for.

What does "wear it away from your face" mean?

Colors do their work by reflecting onto your skin, so the ones nearest your face matter most. A shade that is not ideal can still be fine as trousers, a skirt or a bag, where it is nowhere near your complexion.

I am between two seasons. Which should I pick?

Try both. If a color comes back well for one and badly for the other, it is a color to be careful with. If both agree, the answer holds whichever of the two you turn out to be.
