Best colors for deep skin
By the Skintonic team · SKINTONIC LLC · Updated
Deep skin carries more color than any other depth, and that is a plain statement about contrast rather than a compliment. A shade that overwhelms a light complexion has something to push against here, so the practical range is wider, not narrower — the shortlist is usually a question of which strong colors, not whether to wear strong colors at all.
Across 1,120 combinations containing a very deep skin tone, the analysis returns Deep Autumn, Deep Winter and Cool Winter most often. Those are the types built around depth and clarity, which is exactly what you would expect. Undertone still decides between them, and it is the reading most often got wrong because camera metering is least reliable on deep skin.
The honest key point
Deep skin is one reading on one of the four axes, and on its own it cannot name a palette — undertone, depth, contrast and chroma name it together. So what follows is two deep skin shortlists, split by undertone, rather than one list of shades.
Deep skin with a cool undertone
At the cool / rosy end of the deep skin range, the analysis returns Deep Winter, Cool Winter, Soft Summer and Cool Summer across 448 runs. Eight deep skin colors drawn from them, each already published on its own season page:
- Deep Emerald
- True Red
- Muted Burgundy
- Deep Raspberry
- Wine
- Royal Purple
- Deep Sage
- Blueberry
Deep skin with a warm undertone
At the warm / golden end, the same sweep over 448 runs returns Deep Autumn, Warm Autumn and Bright Spring instead. Hold this eight against the eight above: they barely overlap, and both belong to people with deep skin, which is the whole argument against treating depth as the question.
- Warm Deep Burgundy
- Deep Rust
- Shocking Pink
- Pine Green
- Forest Green
- Bright Turquoise
- Chestnut
- Burnt Sienna
What usually works against deep skin
In words rather than in shades, because standing in a shop with deep skin what you need is a category that applies to a garment nobody has photographed. With 3 types in play for deep skin, these hold across most of them, and where they disagree the disagreement is itself the answer.
Pale, washed-out pastels at the neckline
Very light shades against the depth that comes with deep skin disappear, and on the way out they soften the jaw and take the edges of the face with them. The same shade as a skirt is no trouble at all.
Three outfits for deep skin
Assembled from the deep skin chips above rather than from a lookbook — the first piece sits nearest your face and has to be right, the second is forgiving, and the third is small enough to be a bag, a scarf or a shoe.

Where to go next with deep skin
Each type has its own page with the whole explanation, including what its contrast wants and which metal sits better against it: Deep Autumn, Deep Winter and Cool Winter. For how deep skin sits against the other four depths, the skin tone overview puts them side by side.
Your exact palette depends on all four factors, not on deep skin alone. The scan reads undertone, depth, contrast and chroma from one photo, shows you the three colors it took off your face so you can correct them, and names your type — free, in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

Questions
Does deep skin mean I am a Deep Autumn?
Not on its own, no. Deep Autumn came up most often in the 1,120 runs behind this page, but Deep Winter and Cool Winter all came up a good deal too. The depth of deep skin is one reading out of four, and the remaining three are what actually settle it.
How do I tell whether my deep skin is warm or cool?
Hold a gold chain and then a silver one against your jaw at a window, watching the deep skin rather than the metal — cool or rosy skin is lifted by the silver and warm or golden skin by the gold. The undertone test walks through three more of these for deep skin. If the two metals look equally fine against deep skin, you are probably in the neutral middle, which is common and is not a failure to decide.
Can I wear black with deep skin?
Yes, and with deep skin more easily than most people manage it — black needs coloring deep enough to meet it, and the types deep skin tends toward have that depth to spare — so here it behaves like the neutral it is sold as rather than the loudest thing in the room.
