Colors that make brown eyes pop

By the Skintonic team · SKINTONIC LLC · Updated

Brown eyes get the thinnest color advice of any, usually some version of "brown goes with everything", which is both true and the reason nobody with brown eyes has ever found it useful. The interesting fact about a brown iris is that it is a low-chroma orange, and low-chroma oranges have a very specific opposite.

In our data the brown range measures 60° at its midpoint, with a chroma of 2 out of five — modest, which is why contrast has to do more of the work here than it does for blue or green. A shade near 240° lifts a brown iris noticeably; one near 60° warms and deepens it. Both lists come from the twelve published palettes.

The honest key point

Making brown eyes stand out and finding your palette are two different jobs with two different answers. Eye color feeds only the chroma reading, so brown eyes nudge a result rather than deciding it. Both of the lists below are about what happens to brown eyes, not about which colors suit the rest of you.

To bring brown eyes forward

The published palette colors landing closest to 240°, which is the far side of the wheel from the 60° that the brown range measures at its midpoint. No more than two of the eight come from any one season, so nothing here reproduces a palette for the sake of brown eyes:

To deepen brown eyes instead

The opposite move, and a genuinely different set: colors sitting near the iris's own 60° rather than across from it. These make brown eyes read richer and more saturated rather than brighter, which is usually the better choice in the evening:

What flattens brown eyes

One rule covers nearly all of it, and it concerns chroma rather than hue: a shade with no color in it gives brown eyes nothing to react against. A flat mid-gray or a dusty beige at the neckline leaves brown eyes reading as a feature of the face rather than as a color, which is the reverse of what both lists above are for. Beyond that, what suits you is a question about your palette rather than about brown eyes.

Three outfits for brown eyes

Assembled from the brown eyes chips above rather than from a lookbook — the first piece sits nearest your face and has to be right, the second is forgiving, and the third is small enough to be a bag, a scarf or a shoe.

Finding the palette behind brown eyes

Both lists above hold for brown eyes whatever your type turns out to be. Which colors suit the whole face is the other question, and among people with brown eyes the commonest types are Warm Autumn, Soft Summer, Cool Summer, Cool Winter, Deep Autumn and Soft Autumn — a spread wide enough to count as a hint rather than an answer.

Your exact palette depends on all four factors, not on brown eyes alone. The scan reads undertone, depth, contrast and chroma from one photo, shows you the three colors it took off your face so you can correct them, and names your type — free, in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

Questions

What colors make brown eyes pop?

Shades landing near 240°, the opposite side of the wheel from the 60° a brown iris measures at. The first set of chips above is the published palette colors landing nearest that angle to brown eyes. Wear one near your face rather than below the waist, because the whole effect depends on the garment reflecting up into brown eyes.

Do brown eyes limit which colors I can wear?

Barely. Of the four readings, brown eyes feed the chroma one and a little of the contrast one, which is a nudge rather than a decision. Across 960 combinations containing them, Warm Autumn, Soft Summer, Cool Summer, Cool Winter, Deep Autumn and Soft Autumn all came up — a spread wide enough that brown eyes rule almost nothing out.

Will colored lenses over brown eyes change my result?

They change what the analysis reads, so photograph brown eyes in whatever you genuinely wear. If the lenses go in every morning then that is the color other people see instead of brown eyes, and the result wants to be taken with them in. If they only come out at weekends, photograph brown eyes as they are and treat the two lists above as the useful part of this page.
